Soldering

copyright : Dieter Bedenknecht NZ. -06-2000

When you're done with the copperfoiling, lay the glass pieces out
onto the design, as close together as possible.A liquid flux is essential
for a smooth solder flow and should be applied with a brush over the
entire copper foil surface immediately before soldering.Tack solder
by applying hot solder (use 60/40 solder as this melts better and
an 80 watt soldering iron) to several spots by touching the solder
and copper foil simultaneously with the iron's tip. After all the pieces
are tacked together, spread a thin, even coat of molten solder along
all seams. If necessary, fill small gaps between pieces with additional
melted solder.Turn the project over and do the same. Then apply a second
layer of solder for a rounded, raised seam, again do this to both
sides.

When having done this to both sides, raise the outer edges of your
project too. Allways holding your project at an straight angle so
that the solder wont run off.

When having finished with soldering, apply a hook using your pliers. The
hook can be just a piece of copper wire you've bend into shape.Whenever
you apply a hook, it allways has to go on a joint for strength. If this means your project
wont hang straight you have to apply two hooks to even it out.

Now that you're finished you can wash your project with hot water
and detergent, to get rid of the flux.If you don't like the silver
finish of the solder you can use black patina or copper sulfate, which
are chemicals which are applied using an old cloth over the solder
to give it an antiqued look.Once again wash and dry.
When working with the patina or copper sulfate, wear gloves and store
any unused quantities safely.

Important hint:
Allways try and finish your soldering in one go, if you can't and
have to do some more the next day, wash your project, as the flux
if left on too long can dull the glass
